Drum Solo with Nanna Candelaria - belly dance

Nanna explains the fundamentals in optimizing and maintaining full and lucid shimmies, clear crisp accents, fast paced footwork, and exhilarating rhythmic combinations. A thorough breakdown of basic movements is intended to introduce the steps to beginning dancers. And a
sophisticated approach to subjects such as muscle control, proper alignment, and proper distribution of strength aid in defining and perfecting movement for dancers of all levels.

This DVD ultimately teaches a full drum solo choreography with a drill section of each component to aid in your progression towards a new level of dance.

Wanted: Duo/Trio

Hello friends.

I've been studying belly dancing for over 2 years now, and to be honest, I have gotten a little bored and have reached some sort of weird plateau. I need more of a challenge that doesn't require going to more classes or workshops. So here I am, looking for someone or someONES in East Bay to form a duo or trio with. I have studied traditional Egyptian cabaret for a majority of my 2 years, but I am also currently studying tribal fusion and I'm pretty much open to any style.

My studio already has formed troupes, but I'm really not into dancing with more than 3 people. I get claustrophobic.

I just need a gal or gals to obsess over costumes with, watch endless belly dance performance DVDs, and create some fun routines for competitions and general practice.

Any takers?

P.S. No I am not a serial killer or that dude that stalks belly dancers. You can find me at http://www.facebook.com/bellybecca

Looking for an Int/Adv teacher

Hey all, I'm pretty new to the area and am looking for an intermediate to advanced teacher in East Bay or San Francisco. I particularly like Egyptian style, but am amenable to Cabaret or Tribal Fusion. I'm not very interested in ATS. I need a teacher who offers drop in rates or class cards as I'm a grad student and can rarely commit to a whole set of classes as some teachers prefer.

Since moving here I have studied with Mira Betz, and really enjoy her classes and her emphasis on strong technique. I'd like to add in another class or two that focus on putting the dance together and performance skills.

Other teachers I've found are Jill Parker, TerriAnne Gutierrez, Shabnam, Tatseena and Monica. Are there any others that I may have missed? Could anyone tell me a bit about them?

Thanks for all your help!

Warning: Look out for this e-bay seller of tribal dance gear

Hello All,

I just had a really bad experience purchasing a tribal dance outfit on e-bay and thought I'd give you all a heads up. At the end of December I bought and paid for a beautiful tribal belt (burgundy with fringe) and a crochet shrug (supposedly in stock items) from e-bay seller ScarletsLounge. I was very excited because I wanted this for my TribalFest performance. Well two weeks later I get an e-mail from the seller that she needs my measurements since this is a custom order (which takes 4 to 6 weeks). "Cool" I thought "that will be even better". So I sent my measurements and waited. Six weeks went by and nothing, so I e-mailed her. A week later she replied that it will be sent in a week. So I finally get the items (10 weeks after purchase) and they do not fit, not even close. The belt falls right off and the shrug looks ridiculous it's so wide at the top. So, I wrote her a message. Five days later, nothing. I send another message, five days later nothing. So I contact e-bay and there is nothing they can do, if you want to file a claim it has to be within 45 days of purchase and Paypal can only reverse charges within 30 days. So I'm screwed.

Now, the clothes are beautiful, but it does me no good because they soooo don't fit. I don't know if this is how this seller always does business or I just got really unlucky, she has good feedback but mostly as a buyer. Since most of her items are custom orders and they take so long to arrive I would imagine most of her customers cannot leave feedback (e-bay closes the feedback option after 45 days I think). Anyway, I'm not telling you NOT to buy from this seller, just be wary. The guy at e-bay said that if this sort of thing happens in the future, open a case the second it seems someone is taking too long or trying to pull something. You don't have to actually follow through and can close the case as soon as you receive your item, but at least that way you are protected. I hope this helps you all to avoid the same headache I had to.

NEW Egyptian Oriental Dance Class

Learn all the aspects of Oriental dancing needed to perform an Egyptian Dance Set

I have loved working as a professional Oriental dancer throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. For many years I made my living dancing at restaurants and clubs where the Arab community would gather, sharing the common experiences of homelands they were parted from. I always danced to full bands with professional Arab musicians. They came from all areas of the Middle East, and had spent years playing for professional dancers.

It was from them that I learned most of what I know of the music, dance, costuming, feeling and format of oriental dance as it is typically done in the Middle East.

Please join me for this new class; Entrances, Taqsim, Om Kalthoum, Popular songs, Folkloric, Beladi section, Percussion solo, The finale

The end of a decade of Heavy Hips Empowerment, STrength and Community for Women

Yes my lovely sisters of mindblowing, wombcauldron stirring, evolution, revolution, restitution, regenerative, insight catchment, mindful, authentic dance, movement, theatre, prayer, sisterhood web weavers and healers!!!!!!!!! - (whew you all are an awesome community) - Palika is transforming yet again, responding to Gaia's call and Heavy HIps Tribal Belly Dance as school community is officially closing her business doors (never her heart or inner circle though).

On the close of this full moon my garden is bursting with new life, regeneration of energy, elemental forces manifesting in a mandala outside my cave door and I let go, I release and come full into myself as I am now. I'm stepping into a larger body, mind, soul dance practice and prayer of green photosynthesis, of rich brown microbial web soil life, of myceliating fungal networking of repair and regeneration, of polycultural food forest fractal freedom, water witching winding, permaculture prisms and hope for humans as healers to the Gaia landscape instead of destroyers.

I stand whole and bow richer for this incredible gift of visioning, healing, growth, transformation, learning, sisterhood and community that has been a decade of wonder and enrichment as Heavy Hips Tribal Belly Dance - a gift from the Goddess, unsought but heeded when she beckoned. I have been humbled, stretched, pushed, pulled, challenged, excavated, oxygenated, heard, sung to, healed, blown out of my mindset and bodyset, joyed, buoyed, formed and reformed, found, lost, strung out, discovered, appreciated, scorned, blissed out, gifted, stunned, rooted, called, loved and loved some more, recognized, returned, rerooted, caressed, birthed and died, freed, and deeply blessed on this exploration/journey. I offer gratitude, I offer thanks, I bow to the Divine in all who have come to learn, come to heal, come to transform, and come to find their voice and service in the loving womb of Heavy Hips. The groundbreaking Heavy Hips website (on which many built) will remain up as a template and inspiration for women finding their way on the path of dance as prayer, healing, celebration and sisterhood.

While I have been working on the inner levels of release of Heavy Hips for over 3 years now - the physical release of the accoutrements grounds me in the elemental material plane of letting go. I have been a collector of functional art and beauty, both ethnic and handcrafted for over 3 decades. Much of which has been amassed as a Director of a Performance Troupe and Dance School and Bazaar is yearning for new hips to illuminate and empower, new hands to be caressed and protected by, new walls to shine their rich heritage out from.

Thus all is being auctioned and sold on Ebay - new treasures being posted daily. May you give gratitude and haven for these beauties but know that they are not who you are. Here is the link for my listings - you can also search by seller - Mayadevi108.

Please respect that quality crafted goods are not available at KMART prices. If you are a vendor and want the entire inventory we can discuss a market discount.

So... Dive in. Relish the opulence of quality collectible vintage tribal mirror cholis of the Kutch and Banjara tribes, collectible ethnic silver and jewelry, silk Flying Skirts spinning skirts that drip with beauty, tribal textiles like saya gosha fringe and tassel hip wraps from Uzbekistan, Tajikastan and Turkmenistan, coin and metal riveted Afghan belts (which are really sleeves from their fabled ethnic dresses), vintage (not new) Banjara mirror belts, Banjara embroidered and embellished tribal skirts, Flying Skirts silk bloomers and cholis and yummie silk veils in jewel tones from LRose Designs, antique silk wedding veils from India, Turkoman and Uzbek coats and more. I'm also selling related media and props - a perfect trio of gourds and brass waterpots, thick stemmed glasses for dancing on, candle glasses and other bits.

In gratitude to Life, Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit, with a prayer to remain in service - I bow with folded hands.

My daughter is keen to have her hair dyed with henna.

Do any of you know someone in the bay area who does it? (we'll be visiting there soon)

We talked to someone local to us who told us that our hair was too light to be dyed with straight henna - we would need to have it mixed with other things. If we didn't, our hair would be orange!

ACL Surgery - Have You?

As some of you know, I was not able to attend Tribal Fest 09 because I tore my right ACL in April and was heading into surgery at that time. I do have to give props to my troupe who did an amazing ATS performance on Saturday afternoon! (PS, I'll be teaching at Tribal Fest-10)

I wanted to check in with the Tribe family and find out if other's have stories to share about ACL tears, recovery, performing post-ACL recovery, resources or advice that you care to share

I live in Califonia, but after much research, I found an amazing ACL doctor located in Bend, OR. Her name is Cara Walther of Desert Orthopedics. She is the US Women's Olympic Ski knee doc, and has made it her life's passion to study knees of women and girls. Seems that our physical make-up makes us more prone to ACL injury.

I am banished to Bend, OR for 6 weeks, through end of June due to the type of ACL surgery I had. It's a great technique called Healing Response that allows for 1/2 time recovery, so I'll be dancing again in 4 months, v.s 6-9 months. It can only be done if the ACL tear is very close to the femer and the ligament still in good shape. They tap a few holes into the femer bone causing it to bleed. The stem cells cause a blood clot and the ACL binds to the clot, in the femer and all is well again.

The physical therapy requires a lot of dedication on the patient's part. PTs say the love working with dancers because we are so motivated to get our knees back to 100%.

Would love to get a thread going for others to learn and share. This is also cross posted on my site, Black Sheep Bellydance and ATS tribe sites.
Here's how it works:

add $5 more for each additional person over two
(A $20 non-refundable deposit will be required when you sign up for a time slot)

What you'll receive:
(additional CDs are only $5.00!)

So...a troupe of 4 can have troupe photos for as low as $15/person!

FRIEND NEEDS HELP!!!!!!

Ok, I'm not sure where else to post this, but a friend of mine is coming to SF and needs help.

Here's her post.
"Hi all, as most of you know, I'm a crazy hippie. It's embedded in my blood, in my soul, it's just the way things are. :p As most of you probably also know, I'm an environmentalist, and working with Greenpeace has been a life long dream of mine. That opportunity has finally been presented to me and I'm thrilled! Out of hundreds of applicants and with only 35 spaces available, Greenpeace chose me to attend their Summer Organizing Term in San Francisco, Ca. The term lasts from June 1st - Aug. 14th and will consists of 50 trainings from Greenpeace activists and lead trainers from other organizations. The training also consists of an 8 - 10 day expedition in which we get a chance to receive hands on grassroots community organizing for a Greenpeace action campaign. This is a once in a life time opportunity that I simply can not miss! I'm writing to you all today to ask for your help. The tuition for the term in $3950, I will be doing multiple fundraisers over the next month and a half, but I am also simply asking for donations from my friends. All the money I collect will go directly to my tuition and/or cost of living once I arrive in San Francisco. Anything you might be able to offer would be greatly appreciated from $10.00 to $50.00, whatever you can afford, I would not be able to express my thanks enough.

If you would like to make a donation, please just contact me and we can work something out or just click on the paypal link on my page. I'll even work on your yard or clean your house to work for the donation! :p This means the world to me, and I thank each and everyone of you from the depths of my heart for supporting me in this effort.

THANK YOU ALL!!! "

My part is trying to find some dancers or anyone in the SF area who would be willing to let her crash on the floor while she's there. I have her contact info if you can help and want to get in touch with her directly. Please let me know if you know where I can find some leads and where else i can post this info :)

New Year's Resolutions

Does anyone have any New Year's Resolutions about dance they want to share?

In belly dance, I will get comfortable enough in leading that by June, I will be leading group improv a proportional amount (1/2 the time if there's two of us, 1/3 of the time if there are three of us, etc.)

In hoopdance, I will get good enough that I could do a public performance. (I don't expect to have an opportunity to do a public performance, but this kind of resolution worked well for me to take belly dance to that level, so I feel comfortable recycling it for this!)

Looking for somewhere to stay in SF

Helloooooooo :)

I had some fabulous news!
I have been accepted on to the GS and Teacher training with Carolena in Feb 2009
My flight is booked and I'm going to be arriving in SF on Feb 16th and returning to the UK on March 9th.
I have never been to the states before and am travelling alone.
Travelling alone is a fairly rare event for me so this is quite a big thing, I am very excited though!

I am looking to find a place/places to stay during my visit.
Rather than staying alone, I think It would be much better if
I actually stayed with someone, even for just some of the time.

What would certainly help is just to have someone to show me round a bit as I
have not a clue about the place and don't know anyone there.

If anyone could put me up for even just one or two nights during my stay in SF
It would be much appreciated and I can promise you I am a very good
house guest, completely house trained!!!

The reason I usually avoid travelling alone is because I suffer from narcolepsy which means
catching buses sometimes results in my taking what one might call the scenic route! hehe
My wonderful partner usually drives me everywhere but on this occasion I will be going it alone.
I am sure I will be fine but having a local contact is always helpful just in case.

I can guarantee you that I am the liveliest smileyest narcoleptic bellydancer you will ever meet! ;)

Please contact me here if you are able to help

Thanks

Bea xx

I have been absorbed in the world of belly dance for the past year and a bit and this world is quickly expanding for me as I learn
more about belly dancing in all parts of the world.
I am heading to San Fransisco next Friday and I would love to know about any belly dancing performances
and workshops taking place this from the 11th to the 19th.
Does anyone have any ideas? We will be situated somewhere around Golden Gate Park if that helps.

Belly Dance classes/teachers: Need advice!

I am relatively new to the Bay Area and still haven't connected with all of the great dancers and teachers that I know are up here. I dance professionally and teach myself, so am looking for something to really challenge me and take me to the next level. I have tried some classes at the Suhaila studio, but am looking for others too.

For whatever reason, I have not connected to the dance community up here and am looking to connect with my sisters in dance.

Any advice on classes, teachers, workshops, etc. would be great!!!

Thanks!

Come get solo or troupe portraits taken at Desert Dance!

I will be a vendor at DD this year offering 30 minute individual and troupe portrait appointments! I will be located on the lower floor in my richly decorated, portable portrait studio.

Here's how it works:

Up to 2 people = $50 for a 30 minute shoot
+$5 more per each additional person over two
(A $20 non-refundable deposit will be required when you sign up for a time slot)

** Sorry! Due to time constraints, individual and troupe portraits will need to be booked as separate appointments.

What you'll receive:

5 finished images mailed to you on one CD. (A selection of finishing options will be available to choose from.)
*no restrictions on personal usage (printing, posting, portfolio)
(additional CDs are only $5.00!)

So...a troupe of 4 can have troupe photos for as low as $15/person!

I'll be at Desert Dance for the whole weekend so make a note to stop by and sign up for a photo appointment!

SEE YOU THERE!

Hello ladies!
I'm relocating to the area Nov. 1st.
Instead of trying to rent from some random person on Craigslist, I thought i'd check here first and see if there were any 'like minded' individuals who needed a roomate.
I'm looking to pay $450 a month max, including utilities.
I'm also looking for a pet friendly household, as i have a 4 yr old chihuahua.

If you know of anything let me know!
Please respond to:

just a tourist and looking for restaurant with dancer

Hi there. I'm here in the bay area with family this week and wanted to find a restaurant where I could bring my young daughter and my young nieces for dinner and a bellydance show. Any suggestions? We'd rather not go into SF proper if possible; we're in Newark, close to Fremont.

I may not be able to get on tribe every day while I'm out here, but you can send me a PM, and I'll get that sooner.

We leave Saturday, so anything on Thursday or Friday night would be preferable. Or earlier in the week, if that's even an option.

Thanks much! :)

I'm still looking for a dancer, any style, to fill my 12:30 PM spot for my "I dance..." project (see below). Dancer will be compensated by receiving a printed and digital copy of their finished image. Time slot is 30 minutes long. If you are interested, please message me here or send an email to my email address below and I will send you a confirmation with what to bring and directions.

THANKS!

Gladys White
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"I dance..." Shoot: July 26 in San Jose!
"I dance because it makes me happy."
"I dance as a form of sacred prayer."
"I dance to feel younger."

Why do you dance?

I have finally scheduled shoot number one for my "I dance..." project!

It will be at a photo studio in Downtown San Jose on July 26th. I'll be taking names for 30 minute portrait slots with the first slot at 11am and the last slot at 5:30pm. This project is open to all dance styles. Come in your favorite costume (or dance gear) with your favorite music in hand. Think about why you dance so that you can complete the phrase "I dance..." You will be asked to sign a model release in order to participate. As a thank you, you will receive a soft copy and an 8x10 hard copy of your finished image which will combine your photo and your reason for dancing into a completed piece.

If you are interested in participating, please send me a message here with your top three desired time slots, and your contact information, or send me an email with the information to gladys@thenakedartisan.com . I will then confirm your time and provide the address and directions to the studio.

Thank you in advance for your support and participation!

Mira Betz Intensive in San Francisco

Have you heard? Mira will be holding a week long Performance Instensive in San Francisco. It sounds amazing, I cant wait! Here is a blurb from her website:
A unique, versatile approach to the bellydance intensive, a weeklong designed for the dedicated dance enthusiast itching to take their performance to the next level.
This intimate group exploration will stretch your notions of how dance can be striking on stage, and allow you to unlock new areas of creativity in your bodies, and your mind.
The seminar brings together many of the styles and forms which Mira has carefully integrated into an exciting, powerful, liberating approach to creation, including: personal expression, musicality, precise defined technique, structured improvisation, focused writing exercises and more.

~Explore ideas of shaping thought and feeling into meaningful forms of musical expression
~Develop your stage persona
~Challenge your ideas of history, dance, choreography, and context

This will be run more akin to a college seminar than a "bellydance class", complete with research projects, presentations, and critique. The class size will be VERY small in order to insure personal development, encourage process, and increase individual attention. This class will fill up quickly, register early to save a spot!

For more information check out www.miramania.com or e-mail info@miramania.com
Only 15 spots total and they are filling up fast!

I've been back in the belly dance world for three years and am looking to reconnect with my first belly dance teacher. She danced as Aisha in the '70s. I met her in Omaha where her husband was stationed at Offut AFB. She danced in Omaha at Nasr's Harem Lounge. I believe she divorced and moved back to the Bay Area. She grew up in Hayward where her mother had a dance studio that specialized in Polynesian dance.

"I dance..." Shoot Scheduled for July 26 in San Jose.

If you are interested in participating, please send me a message through Tribe with your top three desired time slots, and your contact information, or send me an email with the information to gladys@thenakedartisan.com . I will then confirm your time and provide the address and directions to the studio.

Thank you in advance for your support and participation!
TerriAnne Performs in Healdsburg June 20th!!!

Dear Friends:
Please join us for a tribal, summer solstice celebration featuring the music and art of North African and Middle Eastern Dance more commonly know as “belly dancing”. For indigenous peoples all over the planet, the longest day of the year is celebrated as a symbol of light, hope and fertility.
Again we will follow the drum, as the hard wood, hour glass shaped djembe of tropical Africa moves north with tribes migrating along the Nile and morphs into the lighter and more portable, hour glass shaped dumbek of North Africa. As the drum changes so does the beat and a new art form emerges: Middle Eastern dance and music.
TerriAnne and Susu are masters of North African dance and it is pleasure to welcome them to our gallery.
All the best,
Phil Rasori

Our ongoing exploration of African drumming now leads us north to Egypt and the Middle East. Please join us in celebrating the summer solstice with the haunting tribal music and “belly dancing” of North Africa performed by TerriAnne Gutierrez and Susu Pampanin.
TerriAnne is the artistic director of the Joweh Dance Company and has performed nationally and internationally. She is well known in Healdsburg and the Bay Area where she has taught Middle Eastern Dance for many years. It is a truly an honor that she and Susu have agreed to perform at our gallery.

Hi! I'm visiting for the month of June and was wondering if someone could tell me where to visit/shop for bellydance classes/shows/costumes/etc. I plan on taking a class or two with Jill Parker and I have tickets for a show FatChance is putting on (both things I promised my instructor back home I would do - besides practicing my drills in my hotel room every night!). What else should I see/do?

Thanks so much!!! =)

"I dance..."

I dance because it makes me happy.

I dance for my health.

I dance to be closer to the divine.

I dance because it makes me feel beautiful.

I dance to celebrate life!
_____________________________________________________________
Why do you dance?

I'd like to know. I'm going to be embarking on a photo project where I'd like to explore this question. How will this work, you ask? The project will involve a portrait of you, the dancer. You will be asked to wear your favorite costume or dance gear. After about a 30 minute session in front of my lens, you will be asked to complete the sentence, " I dance..." I will then digitally incorporate your quote into your image to create a finished piece. The end goal is to have a "photo essay" of sorts that can be shown at various venues.

What I'd like to know is:

Are you interested in participating in this project?

You will receive a finished digital copy of your image as a thank you for your participation. I used to dance, and sometimes still do. I know what dance meant and means to me. I dance because it makes me happy. Why do you dance?

Watch for further details.

**Please message me with your contact information if you'd like to participate.**
