"I dance..." Shoot Scheduled for July 26 in San Jose.

Why do you dance?

I have finally scheduled shoot number one for my "I dance..." project!

It will be at a photo studio in Downtown San Jose on July 26th. I'll be taking names for 30 minute portrait slots with the first slot at 11am and the last slot at 5:30pm. This project is open to all dance styles. Come in your favorite costume (or dance gear) with your favorite music in hand. Think about why you dance so that you can complete the phrase "I dance..." You will be asked to sign a model release in order to participate. As a thank you, you will receive a soft copy and an 8x10 hard copy of your finished image which will combine your photo and your reason for dancing into a completed piece.

If you are interested in participating, please send me a message through Tribe with your top three desired time slots, and your contact information, or send me an email with the information to gladys@thenakedartisan.com . I will then confirm your time and provide the address and directions to the studio.

Please join us for a tribal, summer solstice celebration featuring the music and art of North African and Middle Eastern Dance more commonly know as “belly dancing”. For indigenous peoples all over the planet, the longest day of the year is celebrated as a symbol of light, hope and fertility.
Again we will follow the drum, as the hard wood, hour glass shaped djembe of tropical Africa moves north with tribes migrating along the Nile and morphs into the lighter and more portable, hour glass shaped dumbek of North Africa. As the drum changes so does the beat and a new art form emerges: Middle Eastern dance and music.
TerriAnne and Susu are masters of North African dance and it is pleasure to welcome them to our gallery.

Where should I go?

Hi! I'm visiting for the month of June and was wondering if someone could tell me where to visit/shop for bellydance classes/shows/costumes/etc. I plan on taking a class or two with Jill Parker and I have tickets for a show FatChance is putting on (both things I promised my instructor back home I would do - besides practicing my drills in my hotel room every night!). What else should I see/do?

In this workshop Sadie will take you through a series of exercises and drills that will break down ther technique and her drum solo secrets like "Pops" and "Locks" to help you develop sharper more defined isolations necessary for fast drum solo choreographies.

Noon: "DIVA WITHIN"
We all have a stage presence. Does yours say what you want it to? Learn how to own your stage and command an audience. There really are tips and techniques for making this possible. Clearly convey your emotions and set a mood, reach your audience, exchange energy, learn about your most powerful tools for accomplishing these tasks…..like your eyes and your body language! Learn how levels, spatial planes and different areas of the body when focalized, automatically set a feeling.

The shimmy is the dancers' fingerprint. No two people will shimmy the same. Are you ready to develop your signature shimmy? Shimmy combos or choreography will be taught if time is allotted. Get ready to sweat!

1-2:30pm: “VEIL CHOREOGRAPHY”
Once you learn how to play with and facilitate the veil, you'll be able to put it all together in a beautiful veil choreography.

2:45 - 4:15pm: "AFRO-BRAZILIAN / SAMBA"
Brazilian Samba is one of Sadie and Kaya's most requested classes and workshops. This workshop will break down some of the most popular moves and foot patterns in the Samba noPe`, the soloist dance seen at Rio's Carnaval and in many night clubs in Brazil, as well as many of the traditional Afro-Brazilian movements and add them together in exciting choreography or short combinations. Why do you dance?

I'd like to know. I'm going to be embarking on a photo project where I'd like to explore this question. How will this work, you ask? The project will involve a portrait of you, the dancer. You will be asked to wear your favorite costume or dance gear. After about a 30 minute session in front of my lens, you will be asked to complete the sentence, " I dance..." I will then digitally incorporate your quote into your image to create a finished piece. The end goal is to have a "photo essay" of sorts that can be shown at various venues.

What I'd like to know is:

Are you interested in participating in this project?

You will receive a finished digital copy of your image as a thank you for your participation. I used to dance, and sometimes still do. I know what dance meant and means to me. I dance because it makes me happy. Why do you dance?

Dance Club/Hafla

I was talking to Khajulah the other day about possibly having some kind of dance party night. Screw the dance clubs, I'd rather dance with the girls! We could learn moves from each other, have an excuse to dress up (or not), and just dance the night away! I know a lot of people don't have room in their homes to practice moves and this would be a great opportunity to get to know your fellow dancers, maybe try out a new routine on a smaller audience, and get some excersize!

Does anyone know how we'd go about doing this?
Venues?
DJ'S?
How many of you would be interested in something like this?
How could we raise money to put something like this together?

My thoughts- I know a few people that run goth/industrial clubs/shows in san jose and I could probably get in touch with them and learn some basics. I think the MACLA would be a great place to hold something like this but I have NO clue who could DJ...

The next Revenant will be SATURDAY March 8th!
Due to venue schedule, Revenant will be moving to the Saturday following it's normal day. This is for March and March only, April will be back to Friday as normal. Don't forget, Saturday March 8th!
The Theme for March will be "Ghosts of the Middle East", and we are hanging the drapes and lighting the myrrh in anticipation of a glorious gala. Come prepared to be surrounded by stunning gothic belly dancers, lavish decor, and music you can't help but move to!

We need a crew!
Our first event was a great success to the help of several people who went out of their way to get us going. We realized though extra hands are needed. Specifically, we are looking for people willing to come early to set up, stay late and tear down, help with the door, a few more dancers, and possibly someone to help keep the night peaceful and safe. If you would like to lend a hand please send a message! While many of these are not paid positions, there are other perks- and you get to be involved making everything happen.

Hey friends, I'm teaching 2 free classes on Sunday morning at Lulu Lemon Athletica in Union Square. It's my first event as an ambassador for them, and I wanna show them how deep SF freaks roll! It's a totally square environment for such a tree hugging hippy cult. They make a lot of "love yourself as you are" noises...but all the other ambassadors are itty bitty blonde blue eyed pink-wearing yoga instructors and ballet dancers.

Just wanted to remind you of the By Dancers For Dancers show coming up on Feb 24. We need all the enthusiastic, wild cheering people we can get in the crowd because we will be shooting a performance DVD that night. So practice that zaghareet and come on down.

Also, at intermission and after the show we will take the cameras through the audience to interview people about what give a dancer the "it" factor. That footage will appear on a future Secrets of the Stage segment!

I am formulating a lecture and video series on the Dancing in the Golden Era of Egyptian Film. It will span over several weeks and be in several parts, and it will include watching and talking about the dancing of each dancer.

With each dancer, we will discuss technique, performance, era costuming, essence of their dance, their biographies, and more, as well as introduce the singers who sometimes appear in the scene with them.

Nanna will offer expert knowledge on the means to becoming a solo dancer, highlighting individual style, personal expression and character, with an emphasis on core strength, solid skills, form, and proper alignment.
Subject matter will be reviewed in 10 week cycles. Because both classes correspond in weekly subject matter, simultaneous attendance of both classes is likened to a mini-course on the subject(s) of focus. A class guide and itinerary to weekly topics is distributed to class members and is available upon request.

Class 1. - Mondays @ 6:30 – 7:45 pm. - Essential Movements
Core movements, Technique, and Essentials in Nanna's Belly Dance Method
Each class entails an intensive and concentrated study of primary components, such as: Drum Solo Technique, Isolations, Use of Arms, Footwork & Layering.

Class 2. - Mondays @ 8:00 – 9:15 pm. - Creative Combinations
Musical Understanding, Interpretation, and Dynamics are developed through Combinations and Choreographies. Tools and exercises in Projection and Creative Interpretation are introduced. Nanna's Drum Solo's, Finger Cymbal, and Veil Dance's will be taught, along with Dances to Traditional and Modern, Arabic and Non Arabic Music.

David Lagle from Old Time Theatre in Benicia called and they are looking for a belly dancer to appear in their Burlesque Show . The Belly Dancer would do a specific song in the show, but it would be belly dance, not burlesque dancing.

They want the following:

2.Dark Hair
3.20-30 years old
4. Slim build

Wine and silver dress for sale $450

Hi! I just moved to the Bay Area to bellydance, and I desperately need to sell this costume in order to pay rent. I've never
worn it and probably never will. Gorgeous one piece dress, a Marta the
Legend costume. It's wine coloured, and COVERED with silver beaded
fringe and sparkly stones. It's listed on http://www.bauchladen.net
under Passion Flower I think. I'm asking $450 and its in brand new condition.

Measurements:
I'm a 34C and it fits ok. I think you could go down to a B with
padding, maybe a small D. The bra cups I find are a little close
together, but a spacer could be added in the middle. As is, I think a
36 bust could fit as well, the back straps are a little loose. The
neck straps are REALLY long and will likely have to be adjusted
(they're both 11.5"). Overall the dress is too big for me. I'm 5'2"
and its about 5" too long for me. Of course, it could be hemmed. It's
also REALLY stretchy and would fit someone better with larger hips
than me. I have no hips and it looks kinda weird. Around the bum it
measures 38" and that is only somewhat stretched. I figure this would
fit a curvy size 8-10, 34C best. Comes with 1/2 circle veil with
beaded edges, 2 arm bands and a head band.

This was posted last night by a creepazoid named Vaughnster or ''Lord Vaghuan'', who has been in and kicked out of many online groups, in this case, it was posted through another person in my Yahoo! Bellyrolling females group (and God knows how many other Yahoo! groups in particular). This guy has a bellydance fetish, at least in my opinion, that goes way out-of-bounds, and this posting, which I deleted this AM as soon as I went through it, proves that point (pay attention to the last couple of sentences):

The Vaughanster' s Bellydance Video Conte$t!

To enter, prepare a bellydance video just for me. To prove it's just
for me, introduce yourself to me, addressing me as "Lord Vaughan"
or "Vaughanster" , and giving the date right before beginning to
perform.
I'm not setting a time limit, but I recommend that you belly dance
for at least twenty minutes. Save the video on DVD or VHS. I have a
multi-system VCR, TV and DVD player, so format shouldn't be an issue.

If you win, you will need to provide an address to send the prize
money to. I prefer to pay via PayPal, in which case, I would only
need the e-mail address associated with the PayPal account you want

The deadline is St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 2007.

Do NOT submit an entry until February, 2007, since I will still be in
Afghanistan in January, and may not receive it!
There is no limit to the number of entries one dancer may submit, but
I will regard each entry separately, on its own merits. In other
words, I won't simply award 1st Place to the dancer who sends me the
most entries or the most footage; I'll choose the three videos I like
the best, and award the prizes accordingly. Yes, it's possible (but
not likely) that I may award all three prizes to the same dancer, if
she sends me the best three entries.

There are no "holds barred" in this contest. Anyone, of any age,
from any country, with any amount of experience, is welcome to submit
as many entries as they like. The winning entries will be the ones I
find myself watching over and over the most.

The following are not requirements, but merely recommendations, since
I've been watching belly dance videos for a quarter of a century, and
already know what I like and don't like:

1. Camera work:

A. Use the best quality of video equipment and material
available to you.
B. Avoid cutting, panning, zooming, and special effects.
Especially avoid cutting. Set the camera up at what would be eye-
level for a man sitting down, and let it roll. Try to create the
illusion that you're performing for me in person, that I'm sitting
still, and the camera is my unblinking eyes.

2. Costume:

A. The most important part of your costume is your body. It
should appear trim and fit.
B. The lower you wear your belt on your hips, the better.
C. Coordinate colors and styles, including the background and
lighting. Performing in ancient attire at a modern gym would
probably look tacky.

3. Dancing

A. Avoid traveling steps.
B. Avoid pointing your bum at the camera.
C. Usually, if not always, your navel should be the focal point
of the camera.

Where is SF PURE Dance???

I just moved to SF at the end of this last summer and want to make new connections with dancers since I left my old tribe in the mountains. Any help? The Yousry Sharif workshop

Yoursy Sharif is amazing!! The workshop was unlike any other. The level/quality of the dancers who attended was impressive. Dancers traveled from as far as Los Angeles, and beyond to attend this workshop. (I was surprised to see that I was the only SF belly dancer to attend.)
I think this was my favorite workshop to date. I originally signed up for one day but ended up coming back for the second day even after only having 3 hours of sleep the night before. I can not believe we danced for more than 4 hours each day. Time went by too fast.
On Sunday, I was literally in tears knowing Yousry Sharrif was leaving and I would have to travel probably abroad to catch him again. What an amazing insight to Egyptian style dance. I am so sore today.

Ok, I love tribe dearly but DAMN these outages seem like dying gasps to me. So, I have created a networking site on Ning just for us, called Tribe Refugee Bellydancers! We will all need a place to meet up, so I started one and now I'm telling all ya'll. I think of this as the place we gather when/if Tribe comes crashing down, so we don't all turn into lost little sheep, baa'ing into the darkness, all alone.

This new networking spot may take the place of Tribe, or it may not. I'm not leaving Tribe til that curvaceous lady sings, but when I do, I hope to see you on this new platform so we can figure out where to go next.

Class recommendation for out-of-towner?
